Esthwaite Water
TROUT FISHING
The hot weather has severely restricted top of the water fishing, with fish only willing to feed on the surface at either end of the day. During the heat of the day fast sinking lines have been successful as the fish have been holding at 10 – 15 feet deep and gorging on daphnia. Favourite tactics when conditions are like this have been lure/nymph combo’s , however the forecast is set to cool by mid week and so the fishing should improve. The water is alive at present with hatching invertebrates, natural food is abundant with buzzers, olives, hawthorn and alders all present in good numbers. Damsels and dragon flies are now also hatching and the coarse fish are set to spawn any day, adding to the huge larder of food the trout have at this time of year! The rod average is 4.1 fish per angler!
Best recent bags include Alan Dobson from Maryport who fished a damsel nymph from the boats to take 20 rainbows and browns to 3lb+.!
Meanwhile Johnathon Hulme from Blackpool took the largest fish with an over wintered rainbow of 6lb 2oz and 16 other back up fish to complete his impressive haul. All Johnathon’s fish were taken from the boats.
Again boat angler Dave Morris from Lancaster took 8 fish to 3lb + on a di-3 booby combo’.
Season ticket angler John Gardner took 6 fish to 2lb 8oz on hares ears fished from the boats around the cages area of the lake.
David Palmer from Preston fished the car park banking with legered worm to take 9 rainbows and 6 browns. Biggest fish was a cracking rainbow of 5lb 4oz.
Heat 3 of the Esthwaite Water Open Pairs competition was contested by 6 anglers who weighed in 25 fish for a total weight of 45lb 8oz. In second place John Henderson and Tom Nelson weighed in 12 fish for 19lb 3oz and in first place Mike Frith and Mike Henshall weighed in 12 rainbows for 24lb 9oz, including time bonuses. Both pairs now qualify for the final in September!
